What to see in Mondovì

Park Hotel Mondovì

Mondovì is a mediaeval town with a rich history,
close to the Langhe and the Alps

One thing you must do during your stay at the Park Hotel Mondovì, is pay a visit to the old mediaeval town of Mondovì. Located between hills, mountain and plain, Mondovì is a true jewel, with which visitors fall in love at first sight. An old town, rich in history and culture, set in the green Piedmont hills, and so naturally built on several levels. The highest point of Mondovì is the Piazza district, the original centre, located on the hill, reached by means of an exciting ride in the funicular railway. Also not to be missed is a visit to the Cathedralof San Donato in Mondovì, with the nearby Vicoforte sanctuary.

But the first thing to strike the visitor to Mondovì is certainly the multitude of sundials on the frontages of the buildings in the historic town centre, everyone different, and giving the area its nickname of “City of Time”.

Visiting Mondovì also means losing yourself as you wander through the streets and alleyways of the old mediaeval town, crossing the main street to reach the Belvedere, and admiring the wonderful natural surroundings lying below you.

The Piazza district

On the hill around the residential centre, the Piazza district is like an elegant salon, overlooking the entire town, and is the oldest part of the mediaeval town. Visiting the Piazza district is like going back in time, when it was the nerve centre of the local community. Here are the Duomo, the Palazzo di Città and the Governor’s house, timelessly fascinating buildings which take you back into the past. A place which gives the visitor a chance to appreciate all the features of this wonderful part of Piedmont, with its wealth of history and culture, felt in every one of the lovely alleyways, piazzas and corners of the town.

The Funicular railway

A daytime trip on the funicular railway is the best way to visit the wonderful mediaeval town of Mondovì, close to the Langhe and the Alps. Installed at the end of the 1800s to connect the Breo quarter to the older Piazza district, the funicular allows tourists to appreciate the smallest details of the “City of Time”. A symbol of the town of Mondovì, this wonderful funicular railway connects the two centres of this place. An old mediaeval town, probably little known to most tourists, but which has so much to offer to every visitor who explores its streets.

A trip into nature

A holiday at the Park Hotel Mondovì is the perfect choice for nature lovers. Staying in our four-star hotel means living in close contact with nature, throughout your time in the mountains, enjoying a truly relaxing vacation, for complete well-being.

Outings on foot or bicycle, alone or in company, is in any case the best way to appreciate every feature of the surroundings. Even more so, as the landscapes around are entirely unspoilt. Long, peaceful days out, surrounded by nature, await the guests at the Park Hotel Mondovì, who can also benefit from the bicycle storage available, or else have the option to hire bikes.

Cattedrale di San Donato

Standing on the site of the former church of Saint Francis, the Cathedral of San Donato is the main place of Catholic worship in Mondovì. The church has a wealth of works of art, both pictures and stucco work: the chancel and the main altar are decorated with huge frescos. The imposing sandstone façade has a doorway surmounted by the statue of San Donato, to whom the church is dedicated, between images of Faith and Charity.

The Sanctuary of Vicoforte

The Sanctuary of the Nativity of Mary, in Vicoforte, is a masterpiece of the Piedmont baroque.
It is an imposing church, one of the largest in the region, whose cupola, a horizontal ellipsis in section, is the largest of its kind in the world. This sacred place has its origins in the Middle Ages, when the faithful gathered at the small wayside shrine decorated by a fifteenth century fresco depicting the Madonna and Child.
The style is characterised by its understated exterior, and a wealth of pictorial architectural features inside.

Prato Nevoso, in winter and summer

Prato Nevoso is a ski resort in the magnificent area of the Alps, in the province of Cuneo. At a height of 1500 metres above the town of Frabosa Sottana (CN), it is easily accessible, placed as it is on the routes from the main cities of Piedmont and Liguria.

There is plenty to do in Prato Nevoso in summer as well, with activities and sports suitable for the whole family. The Bikepark has trails for cyclists of all levels, the children’s play park at Prato Nevoso Village will entertain the little ones, the Telecabina La Rossa Panoramica provides the opportunity to eat at an altitude of 2000 metres. Prato Nevoso offers a world of events for the whole family, all year round!

The Castello di Carrù

Visiting the Mondovì region, it’s quite surprising to discover how much art and culture there is in this old mediaeval town, and what pleasure there is exploring its every corner. An air of former times surrounds those visiting the Castello di Carrù, a building with a rich history, with signs clearly visible on its surface of the former periods through which it has lived. Built during the Middle Ages, as a defensive and strategic structure, the Castello di Carrù today appears to be a typical historic residence. An old building, of a thousand faces, which still preserves its Ghibelline battlements and a keep. Not to be missed is the chamber of the Alcove, inside which is preserved an arch of wood and painted plaster, typical of the baroque period.

Other Monuments

The mediaeval town of Mondovì is not visited frequently by many tourists, but those staying at the Park Hotel Mondovì, will find themselves just a short distance from an old town which preserves places to explore and admire, best discovered on foot. Once you arrive at the old Piedmont town, it is worth visiting the Torre Civica, one of the most important monuments in the area, which can be seen rising high above Mondovì. And it provides the opportunity to look across from the hill above down to the Gardens of the Belvedere, passing by the wonderful Piazza Maggiore, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, and the Congregation of the Oratorio of Saint Philip Neri.
